Youth Leader Training
The Boys' Brigade recognises the importance of having appropriately trained Leaders with the relevant skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to ensure competent and effective work with young people. Our Youth Leader Training contains core modules that concentrate on the values and methods of Christian youth work, as well as programme modules that are designed to communicate how to plan and carry out the activities that create a valuable and enjoyable experience for the children and young people who come to BB.
This training is offered in 2 formats - residential and non residential. For dates see NI Forms & Downloads.
Note about Appointment and Registration of Leaders in BB
It is the responsibility of the church to identify and appoint prospective BB Leaders. The prospective leader should then be registered with Brigade Headquarters using form LREG1. Until the prospective leader completes BB Youth Leader Training they can be registered as a Helper or Warrant Officer. The LREG1 form must be signed by the BB Company Captain and Chaplain. This will commence the registration process with The Boys' Brigade. The leadership status of the person in question will remain at pending until an Access NI check is satisfactorily completed.
New leaders are not permitted to work in any role in a BB Company until the registration process is complete and the appointment card has been issued.
Once training has been completed and with church approval the Leader's role can be changed to Lieutenant or Captain using an LREG 6 form (Change of Appointment).
If you'd like to take a group of young people on a canvas camp, at least one of the leaders needs this qualification. This course aims to equip BB Leaders with the skills, knowledge and understanding to prepare and run a successful canvas camp.
Captain's Element Training
This course aims to equip BB Captains with the skills and knowledge to run effective companies. The course primarily for newly appointed Captains but is open to existing Captains and officers who would like to develop into a Captain's role at a later stage.
Courses are delivered at Battalion level and also at Newport.
Expedition and Outdoor Leadership Training
This course runs annually with GB in March/April followed by an assessment weekend in September. The training has been designed to meet the needs of BB and GB leaders involved in training groups for the DofE Award.
Level 1 - for leaders training and supervising young people undertaking expedition activity (including Bronze and Silver DofE) in lowland or open country. Level 2 - for leaders training and supervising young people undertaking expedition activity (including the Gold Award) in mountain country.
On successful completion trainees receive a certificate valid for 5 years.
We offer a 1 day emergency first aid course for company leaders, covering you with the basics for regular company nights. Includes the basics of dealing with choking, asthma, epilepsy, CPR & defib.
Want to take groups of young people away for a residential or holiday? You'll need this qualification. This course aims to equip BB leaders with the skills, knowledge and understanding to plan and lead holiday activities for children and young people.
